Software developers asked about the focus of their work today cite ìInternetî as the number one applications target, a new survey published by software development industry research firm Evans Data Corp. finds.
The latest volume in the bi-annual Evans Data North American Developer Survey, based on in-depth interviews with more than 800 U.S. and Canadian developers, provides detailed tracking and forecasting of developer activities, attitudes, opinions and understandings.
The comprehensive survey found that ìInternet-Webî development today occupies the time of more than 90% of developers, including a third who devote more than 50% of their time to the Web. ìInternet/Webî edged out ìclient-serverî and desktopî when developers were asked to describe the type of software they write.
Fielded in September 2001, the study noted other key Internet-related trends:
* Realizing that future applications will need to address disparate devices, developers cited ìCross-device publishingî as one of the most significant trends and greatest problems in Web development, looking ahead 12 to 24 months
* Web Services is regarded as the ìmost significant trendî in Web development; more than 37% are currently developing Web Services-enabled applications with more than 63% planning to write code for Web Services in the next year
* Looking ahead 12 to 24 months, the biggest problem respondents expect is having less time to develop and maintain sites, followed by content management and creating better and richer user interfaces
ìThe Internet continues to be the most compelling development environment today because it has so much potential to reach so many people and change the way companies do business,î said Jay Dixit, Evans Data analyst. ìBy investing so many resources in developing Web services applications, developers are signaling their confidence that the cross-device accessibility, application interoperability, personalization, and pay-as-you-go model will revolutionize personal and enterprise computing, make markets more efficient, and maybe even redefine the high-tech economy.î
The North American Developer Survey is an in-depth survey that offers comprehensive information on platforms and operating system migrations, Web services, OSS and Linux, language usage, Internet development, network directory services, architectures, technology adoption and development tools. Included is an appendix of cross-tabs for users vs non-users of Java, C/C++, and Visual Basic. The report also includes cross-tabs by developer segment on every issue.
Evans Data Corporation provides market research focused on the software development community. The company maintains a panel of more than 12,000 developers worldwide.
